It’s 23 degrees in our freezer.
(That's 17 degrees warmer than yesterday.)
And, it's about 40 or so in the fridge.
Now, please remain calm. No need to panic!!
It’s time for a lesson in de-icing.
(Or, at least, we’re hoping so.)
It has been precisely 52 hours since we plugged in our new, improved Norcold. And, as you will soon see, that’s a very important number.
In our effort to consume as much information as possible about our silly refrigerator, we learned about something these things do every 48 hours or so.
They go into “de-ice” mode.
This is something our fridge has done every couple of days for the last couple of years. And, until a month or so ago, it did it without us ever noticing. That was about the time we became uber-obsessed with the temperature in our fridge and we noticed every temperature shift to the tenth of a degree. By then, our faulty control board made it so the fridge went into this cycle and didn’t always come out. (Of course, that's a problem!)
Now, it’s important to know that “de-ice” is not the same as “defrost”. As much as we’d love for these cold boxes on wheels to defrost themselves, they just can’t. That’s up to us. But, they can de-ice. That’s a process where the fridge basically turns itself off for awhile to allow the frosty fins in the back of the fridge compartment to thaw.
We think the process is time-based and not temperature-activated. As much as we’ve monitored this process we’re pretty sure about that. The de-icing process starts, like clockwork, every 48 hours. For about four hours the fridge just sits there doing nothing as it gives a goodly amount of time for the fins to thaw.
48 + 4 = 52, for those of you who are paying attention.
After about four hours the fridge fires up and gets back to the business of cooling. Within hours, give or take a few, everything is back to normal.
Of course, if it’s 97 degrees outside while your fridge goes into this every-two-day cycle, things could heat up pretty fast. Or, if you time your stocking up trip from Walmart about the time the thing starts de-icing you could load your fridge full of lukewarm groceries and be looking at fridge and freezer temps that look pretty darn scary for awhile.

Some folks say that you can “reset” this cycle by turning the fridge off and then on. But, we gotta tell ya, we’re not exactly sure about that.
What we do know is that it’s been a bit over 52 hours since we plugged in our new, improved fridge. Right now, the temperature in our freezer is down to 19 degrees. We think we’ve just passed through our first de-ice cycle and everything is returning to normal.
Like I said. At least we hope so!

I've noticed this 'deicing' too with my Norcold. Didn't have it down to quite the science you have though. But it does go into a shutdown mode for a bit and the fins deice and then away she goes again. I also had to take the little defrost tube that fits into a very tiny cup in the outside panel and feed it thru the grids outside. It was filling the cup all the time and overflowing, now it just drips outside.
so how do you know if it is actually working properly and not dying a slow death?..I guess if it starts up again and begins the cooling process...??
does your fridge run on electric or propane?..and if it's propane does it just light back up on its own or do you have to hit the button?..the fridge we had in our little travel trailer never did this process...is this a new thing??
We are going through a similar process. 14 month old Norcold, worked great for 13 months we were living aboard, but was intermittant, and finally quit in August.
Did all the troubleshooting, finally to dealer, they did the overnight test, heat the tube only to see if things got cold, it did. Next day they opened up the control circuit board, and supposidly found a loose connector. Worked great after that . . .
For three weeks that is. It quit again two days ago. All error codes and diagnostics looked good. So yesterday, I went right to the control board, and un-plugged, replugged every connector.
Hooray, the refer started working again . . . for 5 hours. Then stopped.
Tells me the control board is malfunctioning. Cold solder joint, hairline crack, failing resistor, who knows, but I am ordering a replacement board tomorrow.

We are going through similar problems right now, but not on a 48-52 hour schedule. Refer just stops (and warms up) - doesn't re-start until we turn it off and back on (at least, in the two instances we have had of this).
I had to laugh at your comment about your uber-obession with every temperature shift. We now have a remote in each side of the freezer and one in the frig, along with a chart showing temperatures recorded during the day. When either of us gets up during the night, we check the temps and report to our spouse. I feel like the ICU nurse with a patient coming out of a coma!

Glad to hear you are again "chillin". I can relate to the obsession of checking the temperature which I do quite often after replacing my thermistor. It does like you said.. gets cold..low 30's and then warms to as much as 42 before chilling again. I only watch the fridge box temps afraid to watch the freezer temps!
Anxiously awaiting to hear whether your refrigerator started cooling again. We've been told by the two Norcold service people we have consulted that the cooling unit of the refer should still feel warm when the de-icing is going on (in other words, the refer doesn't really shut down)...

Question about De icing and DeFrosting.
The back of our Fridge gets covered with ice pretty quick.
So we waited about 3 weeks and turned off the Fridge and emptied the contents and let the ice melt.
The frost/ice on the fins melted and drained out the tube to outside, but the ice in the back of the freezer filled the bottom of the freezer. Had to use a Towel to soak it up.
We have a Dometic Royale. I don't know if it automatically does anything except switch electric to gas when needed.
Is it normal for them to Ice on the back of the freezer? about 1 to 2 inches thick after about a month.

Sue and Doug, good questions. I think you're right. If it starts up again - without any assistance - after a de-icing cycle, all is well. Our Norcold runs on propane and electric, and automatically switches between both.
Journey 39n, we feel your pain! Our fingers are crossed that a new control board will do the trick. Will you let us know? We really appreciated you sharing your experience in your comments. We knew we weren't alone!
Laurie and Odel, yes, yes, all is well. It's 2 degrees in our freezer. All systems seem to be back to normal. Our "patient" is out of the coma and about to be moved from ICU. It's time for us to put our thermometer sensor outside where it belongs!
That your fridge starts up again with a little coaxing tells me it might (fingers crossed) be the control board. And, the cooling unit probably does stay warm during de-icing, but I must admit that's one thing we've never checked! Maybe it doesn't really shutdown, but downshifts. Good luck with yours. Mark and Lauree, welcome! Sorry, we don't know a thing about Dometic's. Ice forms on our fins after just a couple of days. It never gets too thick, though, thanks to this auto de-ice cycle. Now, the freezer compartments are a different story. Depending on the weather, ice can build up on the back wall of the freezer within a few weeks. When we defrost the freezer we mop it up with a towel, too. The water would easily fill the little cup behind the fridge. Of course, Ruth's suggestion to stick the tube outside through the vent would definitely help.

Been there, done that! It's funny how you get so hung up on what that darn thermostat reads!!! We're trying to ignore ours!
Got the new circuit board, no difference, changed the thermistor, no difference.
Did a week of testing, using a direct electrical connection to one of the two heating elements, cools great for 4-5 hours, then warms back up again. Repeated over and over, would cool freezer down to somewhere between 15-25 degrees, then warm back up. Turn off for a few hours, then repeat, same results.
Did get one day, where freezer temp dropped to 2 degrees and held for 4 hours staight before I hooked up the circuit board again. I guess that is the lower limit for one heating element cooking with outside temps in the 50's.
Still same cycle after that, 4-5 hours of cooling then warm, shut off for a couple hours, then cycle repeats.
I think the term 'floating clog' has been used by various techs I have spoken to.
I fought it long and hard, but a new cooling unit is on order, we have a $500 deductible on our extended service contract, but it will be fixed.
